DIGITAL EQUITY FAQ

  • Digital equity exists when everyone can access and effectively use digital technologies so as to participate in our society, democracy and economy. Digital equity is the ultimate goal.

Digital inclusion refers to the initiatives and actions we undertake as we work towards digital equity. Digital inclusion is the means to achieve the goal.

  • The term “digital divide” refers to the gap between individuals, households, businesses and geographic areas at different socio-economic levels with regard to both their opportunities to access information and communication technologies and to their use of the Internet for a wide variety of activities.

  • DECA (Digital Equity Coalition Aotearoa) a collective that brings together individuals, organisations and communities working to close the digital divide. DECA acts as a hub, a connector, and a champion for digital equity efforts, supporting access to affordable internet, appropriate devices and digital skills for everyone, especially those currently underserved.

  • DECA will ensure your donations go to digital inclusion initiatives focused on access to the internet and devices, as well as digital skills programmes.

Here’s an idea of what your donation would go to:

$5 goes towards a pack of biscuits to share at a kaumātua (elders) digital skills session

$39 for a basic 4G mobile handset for those unable to make the switch when 3G is turned off later this year

$146 could purchase a refurbished laptop for a Year 9 student who can’t provide their own device for school

$500 could cover the cost of a Chromebook for a senior student

$600 can cover the broadband for one household for a year. This opens the door to work opportunities, skills training and support for those living without internet

$1000 could buy a senior student a new Windows laptop, enabling them to learn to use software like Photoshop or Pro tools
